Shivaji Park- Local Mumbai Site Seeing

A unique park between suburbs and town side of Mumbai is called Shivaji Park. It is technically a playground not really a park, but it is names so. Some famous names who started their legendary journey here, in the world of cricket are Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Wadekar, Suhas Gupte, Vijay Manjrekar, Ramakant Desai, Balu Gupte, M.S. Patil, Dilip Sardesai, Ashok Wadekar, Padmakar Shivalkar, Eknath Solkar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Chandrakant Pandit, Lalchand Rajput, Sandeep Patil, Ajit Agarkar, Pravin Amre, Vinod Kambli and Sanjay Manjrekar.


Around eight cricket clubs are in this park, like those of the late Anna Vaidya and Ramakant Acharekar, which have produced several international cricketers for India. History of the park goes long back during the times of British rule, when the park was created in the year 1925 by the Bombay Municipal Corporation. Till 1927 shivaji park had a different name, and was known as mahim park then. municipal councillor, Avantika Gohkale , changed its name to Shivaji park, who was a warrior king of the Marathas in 17th century. The Shivaji Park has a Gymkhana, which was then known as the Dadar Hindu Gymkhana. It opened its first Tennis court on the grounds in 1927.
The ground is covered or surrounded by a short wall where people sit and relax under shades of the trees which are around the park. It is always crowded and people of all ages, gender, and communities are seen sitting in the blissful shade of the trees. People run, walk around its perimeter and the park has constant energy flowing. In the ground space, more than half of the ground is occupied by various clubs, small and big, to name a couple of big ones, shivaji park gymkhana and The Bengal club. Remaining part of the ground is full of children practicing various sports and activities.


It had other attractions for local people such as a temple, Library, park for senior citizens called nana nani park, A proper gymnasium, Shivaji park nagrik sangha, etc. It is surrounded by rain trees. Reaching shivaji park is easy from dadar station. A long walk or else cabs or private cars can also be a comfortable mode of transportation to the park. The park is loaded with people on weekends. Afternoons are pleasant with lesser people and more space to sit on the edge wall of the park and sip a cold coffee.
